Watchlist
A watchlist is a personal list of Bursa stocks you follow, with notes on why each one matters. Learn how to structure, review and use it in your research.
What is Watchlist?
A watchlist is a personal list of stocks you want to monitor over time, with notes on why each one caught your attention. It is a research log, not a list of trades. It helps you keep fundamentals, volume and price behaviour in one place so that your reviews stay organised and consistent.
How it is calculated
No formula applies. A watchlist is a research structure: stock name and code, date added, the reason, items to check next, and the date of the last review.
How Malaysian investors use it
Many investors group their watchlist by sector or theme, and review it after each quarterly report, because the earnings picture can change quickly. Closing data refreshes price context, but the notes should focus on the business. Adding a stock is for study, not a decision to buy.
Worked example: Company A
Hypothetical Company A, with no real figures:
Common mistakes
- Treating the watchlist as a buy list rather than a research log.
- Adding stocks without writing down why.
- Never reviewing notes after new results are published.
Related terms

Frequently asked questions
Is a watchlist the same as a portfolio?
No. A portfolio records shares you hold, while a watchlist records stocks you are studying.
How many stocks should a watchlist contain?
No single number is right. Keep it small enough to review after every quarterly report.
What should my notes include?
The reason you added the stock, what would change your view, and when you plan to review it.
